HOUCHRON CAPTION (07/15/2001): Treetops peek from the cafe au lait waters of Buffalo Bayou, which inundated city parkland from Shepherd to downtown Houston. Most of the waterside park facilities are designed to withstand flooding. But hiking trails along the bayou sustained about $10,000 damage, and the Gus Wortham Fountain near Allen Parkway, lower right, will require a new pump costing about $3,000. Downtown, fountains at Tranquillity Park sustained about $500,000 damage. Buffalo Bayou crested at 41 feet – about a foot above the 100-year flood stage – at 5:30 a.m. June 9.
